Made to Order Nylon Coupling for Packaging Equipment — Italy

We were approached by an Italian packaging equipment supplier who had observed consistent problems with the original metal coupling on their machines.

They were coping with harsh noise, growing maintenance costs and corrosion risk in a food processing environment when they were in production.

However, more importantly the coupling was not durable enough for continuous long run working and many overload scenarios often lead to a broken motor and Transmission line.

This time it was not just a replacement part. They required a more reliable solution for everyday manufacturing.

Our Solution

We designed a custom nylon coupling using PA66 GF30 engineering plastic which was available in China and machined through CNC, to replace the original metal component.

A typical example of where utilizing a custom nylon coupling will optimize performance while maintaining cost-effective packaging.

The new design aided compared to the metallic version:

  • Reduce running noise during operation
  • Removal of any possible corrosion risk within production areas
  • Lower weight, which reduces load on the transmission system
  • Enhance resistance to oils and cleaning chemicals used in food factories
  • Lower overall component cost

The blue nylon material was also good for optical detection systems which are widely used in the food production lines.

Engineering Details

Overload protection was a major requirement, however;

Due to potential partial or total malfunction under abnormal load conditions that could lead to an amplitude spike and damage the motor and transmission system, the coupling required controlled slip behavior.

Depending on the machine, we then changed the torque structure and adjusted it according to their setup of the customer, ensuring stable and predictable performance during operation.

CNC Machining

With CNC machining, we can easily control critical dimensions and ensure stable batch production.

  • Concentricity controlled within 0.03 mm
  • H7 tolerance for mounting holes
  • Stable assembly with production-ready use
  • No sharp edges and no rough surface finish

Production and Quality Control

Prior to mass production, we provided sample confirmation and inspection reports so that the customer could check dimensions and function.

Once approved, batch production was performed with an appropriate Q/C process in place to ensure consistent and repeatable results.

Result

The custom nylon coupling fixed this issue, and here's how.

  • Machine noise was significantly reduced
  • Maintenance and replacement cost decreased
  • Overload-related failures were reduced
  • Overall production stability improved

The customer then implemented the part into their standard equipment BOM for replicated production.
